This type, which provides damping over the entire stroke, is filled exclusively with oil; it does not rely on gas pressure. The nature of the design results in short free travel when the piston rod is extended. The retraction and extension speeds – i.e., the effective retardation of acceleration when moving a mass – can be significantly influenced by the use of different nozzles and various oil viscosities.
